The Student Assessment Guide and Learning Plan describes the evidence required to be competent in this unit.

You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study. You can also get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide

There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the unit Manage a community sector organisation. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.



Vocational Education and Training online courses are another choice that you can make to assist you to further understand this unit.

Each session is accompanied by a set of colour-coded resources. Please review the resources before attending each VOOC. After the VOOC, you should record your thoughts, ideas and suggestions about the session and share them with other learners. We have provided links to blog, forum and sharing tools but you can also use your own methods. VOOCs are not compulsory but they are an opportunity to gather evidence of your learning by participating with others.

Session 1 -Coordinate organisation planning and Design and implement the structures and process of the organisation - Blue tiles

This includes:
 
  • Identifying appropriate strategic alliances and negotiate and maintain participation
  • Identifying overall purpose and philosophy of the organisation and translate into a written or recorded set of aims and objectives which are clearly understood, measurable and attainable and evaluated as appropriate
  • Implementing appropriate corporate planning processes that make best use of internal and external consultation processes   
  • Implementing appropriate corporate planning processes to ensure responsiveness to client needs  Undertaking appropriate consultation with relevant people and agencies
  • Establishing appropriate management structure and process to coordinate corporate planning, advise decision-makers and reflect principles and philosophy of the organisation
  • Analysing the way in which values and beliefs of workers and stakeholders may influence defined organisation purpose and philosophy and communicate to all relevant participants
  • Making resources available as appropriate to support the planning processes at all levels
  • Developing systems, processes and timeframes for all aspects and components of the planning process
  • Determining appropriate structure for the organisation to match organisation philosophy and purpose
  • Develop, agree, implement and monitor lines of decision-making and accountability 
  • Preparing budgets in line with strategic plan and make allowance for all requirements and components of planning and implementation of programs and services
  • Establishing financial accountability systems which meet agreed organisation best practice provisions
  • Ensuring planning guidelines provide for inclusion of appropriate statutory, legislative and practice provisions
  • Developing clear, fully documented planning guidelines and systems and make them accessible to all involved

  • What is the significance of a philosophy in a service?
  • What are the benefits of being responsive to clients needs and who does it benefit?
  • What would happen if a service did not have fully documented planning guidelines and systems in place and accessible to all stakeholders?




Session 2 -Implement evaluation processes and enable organisation to meet legal requirements- Pink tiles 

This include

  • Holding appropriate consultations with stakeholders to examine issues and trends and advise decision-makers of outcomes as required
  • Completing all required reporting in a timely way in accordance with organisation requirements Identifying, developing and implementing appropriate evaluation arrangements with representation from relevant stakeholder groups
  • Preparing advice and provide to decision-makers within the negotiated format and timeframe
  • Implementing mechanisms to ensure relevant commonwealth, state and local government legal requirements are identified and adhered to
  • Regularly update information about current legal requirements and if appropriate, develop proposals to modify organisation policy and procedures 

A few points to think about for your blog:
 
  • What are the benefits of consulting with stakeholders when examining issues and trends?
  • What would be the consequences for an organisation if legal requirements are not identified and adhered to and how can an organisation ensure it has updated information about current legal requirement?
  •  Community Sector Organisations are constantly evaluating many aspects of the service, what is the importance of evaluation and how can the results of the evaluation be shared will all stakeholders?




Session 3 -Establish the profile of the organisation and market its services- Purple tiles  


This includes:


 
  • Using formal and informal networks as channels to communicate the organisation's activities and achievements
  • Using a range of communication media and activities to convey information about activities and achievements of the organisation to encourage support and interest
  • Seeking and utilising opportunities to promote the organisation through media, government and the community 
  • Displaying confidentiality and sensitivity in details, content and extent of public comment on organisation's activities


     
     
     
    A few points to think about for your blog:
     
    • What are the benefits of communicating the organisations activities and achievements to the marketplace?
    • How can an organisation convey  information about activities and achievements of the organisation to encourage support and interest?
    • What must be considered when marketing the profile of the service?
     
     

     Session 4 - Give direction for the effective management of the organisation and  Manage changes in the organisation- Orange tiles


    This includes 
    • When required, develop and articulate policies and procedures for the employment role of the organisation and monitor their implementation 
    • Promptly address problems in implementing defined procedures to ensure resolution
    • Prepare reports to comprehensively and accurately describe organisation's activities and achievements and present to relevant stakeholders and management, as required
    • When required, facilitate processes of management and/or board meetings to ensure effective and informed deliberations and decision-making
    • Identify and implement mechanisms for effective coordination of activities and services
    • Identifying policy, social, political and economic trends and assess their potential impact on the organisation
    • Assessing and revise management and work practices relative to social, political and economic trends and impacts
    • Defining and monitor indicators for change within the organisation 
    • Identifying and promoting opportunities for positive change and undertake appropriate work to maximise support from staff, clients and stakeholders
     

    A few points to think about for your blog:
    • What are the consequences of not addressing problems in implementing defined procedures in a promote and effective way?
    • How can policy, social, political and economic trends impact on an organisation?
    • What strategies would an effective leader put in place to identify and promote opportunities for change and what strategies would be employed to make the change process positive?
